MP3 and M4A in brief
MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, developed largely at Fraunhofer IIS and standardised in 1993. It is lossy, typically encoded between 128 and 320 kbps, and plays on practically every device made in the last 25 years. Its patents expired in 2017.
M4A is an MPEG-4 container for audio, used by Apple since the early iTunes Store days. It usually carries AAC, the codec that followed MP3 and was designed to sound better at the same bitrate. It can also hold Apple Lossless (ALAC), but AudioDrop writes AAC.
Should you change MP3 to M4A?
Only when something asks for it. Converting MP3 to M4A does not make music sound better, because the MP3 has already thrown away some detail. The good reasons are practical:
- iPhone ringtones are AAC files with an .m4r extension, and the usual route starts from an M4A.
- Some Apple or video workflows, such as certain GarageBand and iMovie imports, handle AAC more smoothly.
- You want a single format across a music library that is otherwise AAC.
- A platform or device accepts M4A but not MP3.

The honest part: re-encoding lossy audio
MP3 to M4A is a lossy-to-lossy conversion. The MP3 is decoded, then encoded again with a different lossy codec. Each encoder removes detail in its own way, so a small amount of extra loss, often called generational loss, is added. You cannot get back what the MP3 encoder removed.
In practice the result is fine for everyday listening if your source MP3 is 192 kbps or higher. AudioDrop encodes AAC at 192 kbps by default, which keeps the new losses small. If you have a low bitrate MP3, such as 96 or 128 kbps, the M4A will sound no better than it and may pick up a touch more artefacting on bright sounds.
If you still have the original WAV, FLAC or CD, convert that to M4A instead. It will always sound better than going via MP3.
Before you convert: a short checklist
- Use Chrome, Edge or Safari. Firefox may not support AAC encoding.
- Start from the highest quality MP3 you have.
- Expect the M4A to be about the same size as a 192 kbps MP3 of the same length.
- Check tags afterwards. Artist, album and artwork may not all carry across.
Making a ringtone from your M4A
A common reason to convert MP3 to M4A is to make an iPhone ringtone. Ringtones are AAC audio with an .m4r extension and a maximum length of about 40 seconds.
Trim your track first with any editor, convert the MP3 to M4A here, then rename the file extension from .m4a to .m4r. On a Mac you can add it to your iPhone through Finder when the phone is connected. On the phone itself, apps such as GarageBand can export ringtones directly.
Because the ringtone is short and played through a small speaker, a 192 kbps AAC encode is more than enough.
